The Mindbridge Board of Directors would like it pointed out that the Mindbridge Art Show Policy was originally approved by the Mindbridge membership in May 2006 and was reapproved on July 2, 2008 with the addendum of adding it to the Mindbridge website. The Mindbridge Art Show Policy has now been posted to the website and can be viewed at https://mindbridge.org/by-laws/mindbridge-art-show-policy/

Welcome to the latest incarnation of the Mindbridge Foundation website. We’ve just upgraded WordPress to the latest version, installed a new gallery plugin and have a new installed a new theme custom crafted for Mindbridge. A couple of quick acknowledgements:
- Thanks to NASA for everything they do and in particular for the image used to help create our new header graphic.
- Thanks to Mark Boulton for his article on designing grid systems.
- Thanks to Michael Angeles for his excellent post on designing blog theme templates from grid systems.
- Thanks to Mark James for the beautiful Silk icons.
- Thanks to Justin Tadlockes for the great tips on using custom fields in WordPress.
One quick note about a new feature with this incarnation of the site, we’re now supporting the use of both hCard and hCalendar microformats. This means if you have the Operator extension for Firefox installed and visit our home page, you can use it to export contact, event and address information (e.g. add one of our events to your calendar, including the event’s address). This wouldn’t have been possible without the custom fields tips from Justin Tadlockes mentioned above.
We hope you enjoy using our freshly upgraded site, but if you do happen to run across any problems with it, please use our contact form to let us know!
John Scalzi will be visiting Prairie Lights Bookstore in Iowa City, Iowa on Thursday, 3 May 2007 at 7:00 pm. This stop is part of a book tour to promote his latest work, The Last Colony. Some of his other books include: The Android’s Dream, Old Man’s War and The Ghost Brigades. Old Man’s War was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in March 2006. It also won the Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction Author and at the same time it was a finalist for the 2006 Locus Award for Best First Novel.

We’ve got trouble.
Right near Iowa CIty
We’ve got Terrible Terrible Trouble.
And it starts with N and it ends with N and it spells NO ICON
For over 30 years we have made for ourselves a home, a gathering a place to share stories and art and fun and friendship. A chance to meet other like-minded folk, who appreciate the joys that we have found in all the forms of fandom.
But we are having trouble keeping this society alive. Sociologists report that all forms of communities are failing in America. The blame is put onto all the distractions that have made it possible to stay at home and be isolated. My stamp club and my comic book reading friends all report the same trend. Nobody wants to do anything that requires effort or participation or time!
I’ve always felt that the rewards of fandom are directly proportional to the effort you put into it. I’ve also felt that a convention should be inclusive enough to accept the wide range of genres and all their forms.
The challenge we all face is this: Icon has lost about $6,000 for each of the last 4 or 5 years. Our three options are
- Cancel the con.
- Cut expenses
- Increase attendance.
These are all hard problems to solve. But we can solve them by working together.
A meeting will be held at ICON this year, like the meeting that was held at last year’s ICON. We need YOU to come forward with ideas, with energy and with a commitment to do something to keep us going. If you enjoy this activity as much as I do, then join us.
