Fritz Lang's Metropolis

On Friday, September 30, 2011 at 8:00pm the Englert will be proud to present the Alloy Orchestra’s performing Metropolis.

Alloy Orchestra is a three-man musical ensemble writing and performing live accompaniment to classic silent films. Working with an outrageous assemblage of peculiar objects, they thrash and grind soulful music from unlikely sources. See Alloy with an astounding new version of Fritz Lang’s visionary masterpiece that includes 25 minutes of newly discovered, restored footage. A near-complete cut of the original film was found in Buenos Aires in 2008. The subsequent reconstruction of “Metropolis” represents one of the most significant film restoration projects in film history. A can’t-miss cinematic event, The Alloy Orchestra has been called “the best in the world at accompanying silent films” by Roger Ebert.

Prairie Lights and the Iowa City Public Library co-sponsor a visit from bestselling author Neal Stephenson. He will be reading from his new novel, Reamde, the breathtaking tale of a wealthy tech entrepreneur caught in the very real crossfire of his own online fantasy war game.

Due to the costs of bringing Neal Stephenson to Iowa City he will only be signing copies of Reamde purchased from Prairie Lights Books. Copies may be purchased at Prairie Lights beginning September 20th at a 25% discount. Neal will also sign a limited number of his earlier books with purchase of Reamde.
